Tips for a beginner

I would like to build my own rods, but don't know where to begin. I recently subscribed to Rod Maker magazine and am reading anything I can find.

Does anyone have suggestions for the best way to begin? Books, Videos, classes? Rod kits vs hand picking parts?

Any suggestions would be great.

To be more specific, the title is: "Handcrafting a Graphite Fly Rod" by L. A. Garcia.

Get the book by Tom Kirkman "Rod Building Guide" It is a very good source of information for the begining rod builder. Try looking at the videos by Artie Hebert online at Mudhole Tackle. There are also two books by Dale Clemens, Fiberglass Rod Making(it's an old book but still very informative) and Advanced Custom Rod Building. There are also several series on rod building at Mudhole and Ken Preston(www.kensfishingrods.com) has a workshop section on his site. There are plenty of sources of info on the web and I'm sure some others will come up with more sites for you to look at.

Good luck,
Steve

Please don't overlook the videos out there. I picked up about 4 videos that were extremely helpful. They say a picture is worth a thousand word ... These videos are worth a thousand pictures. Take Care and good luck

first get your self a copy of either advanced rod building or intro to rod building, both are written by Dale Clemmens.
second call around to rod building shops. There is a good shop in New York Sea Isle sports center they are located in freefort.
they do have classes on this in the winter and fall.
