I would like to build my own rods, but don't know where to begin. I recently subscribed to Rod Maker magazine and am reading anything I can find. Does anyone have suggestions for the best way to begin? Books, Videos, classes? Rod kits vs hand picking parts? Any suggestions would be great. Re: Tops for a beginner

From one begginer. You are on the right track! I recommend books (Tom's would be a good start) and start building with a kit (and not a high $$$). What I found out is I did not know what to even ask until I had some experience. The basics of how to put a rod together will come quickly, the devil will always be in the details! If you can attend some Rod Guild shows (or others) then you can have a base to build on. I can say without a doubt that what I can build now is much better than a year ago and will be even better next year. Learn all you can, then experience will be your guide. Back issues help too.
