E-glass/S-glass

Can someone give an explanation on the difference between S-glass and E-glass. Characteristics, prefences, etc. I realize that this may be very basic but I'm sure I'm not the only one that is clueless as to the properties/benefits of them

Hi Mike,

Here is how it was explained to me. S Glass is a different material than E Glass. They both use the new type resins and this makes the weight of the blanks less when compared to fiberglass blanks. E glass material may be the same as fiberglass material but has the new resin incorporated.

Mike most of the information you seek can be found on a sponsor's site:

Think of the basic difference between then like the difference between the early lower modulus and later higher modulus graphites.

I don't beleive there is a chemical make up difference between S and E types of glass. The S2 type of glass is stronger by 30 or 40% and has a higher compressive strength. E in E-glass is for Electrical and I beleive was devoloped for insulating. S stands for high strength and is goverment spec type of glass. The way the filaments are made or formed is the difference and gives the S-type it's strength. It's also more $$ then E-glass!! I myself have a few S-glass rods and prefer it over E-glass,it seems to have a softer action IMO.

No such thing as a "softer action." Action is fast, moderate or slow or rated according to AA. "Soft" would relate more to power and that is independent of the material used.

S-glass has a higher modulus than E-glass and therefore for the same power or stiffness it will be lighter because less of it is needed to attain that same stiffness. E-glass will be more durable not only due to the higher strain rate of the material, but because for the same stiffness the structure it comprises will be beefier.

Taper has a significant influence upon the performance of a blank, but ultimately this influence can not be quantified. Given a similar resin matrix is there any way to quantify the modulus differences between E-glass, S-glass, and, say gereration IV graphite? Is there any way to quantify the difference in durability or resistance to fracture between these three materials?
