I use hot melt and then carry my thread wrap up onto the tip a bit. Works well and I can get the tip top off with minor heat if I ever need to. On larger saltwater rods I have used the 5 minute quick-set epoxy and have been able to get it off with just a bit of heat too. I am not sure about using the slow cure epoxy you talk about. It might not allow you to replace the top should you ever need to.

I tend to use tip adhesive more than epoxy since the tip adhesive for the same reasons that Mick has mentioned.

I had the misfortune of forgetting my 8' rod in my car on a hot day this summer. Needless to say the tip which had tip adhesive was facing a different direction than it should have.

What I learned from that experience is to ask (or at least warn) the customer of the different types of glues that can be used.
