Rods with no fore grip. How do you close out the end of the reel seat where it meets the rod?

Jim,
Let your imagination be your guide. There are many ways to do it. I keep it simple. Look closely at the photo's on page 11 of the RodMaker article (Vol. 4 - Issue 3). When you epoxy the threads - capillary action will create a smooth transition to the cut down reel seat.

I sometimes use a small cork ring about 1/2 inch wide and sanded to a slope (no thread) to make a nice appearing touch. To sand the slope I wrap the blank and seat with tape and use the edge of my hand vibrator sander. Apply the finish while rotating and it looks great.

On one rod I made several wraps of metallic thread up close to the cork ring which added a nice touch.

I use graphite arbors and position one flush with the end of the reel seat. Then a correctly sized wind check will usually be the correct outside diamater for the reel seat. I have also used 1/4" (I believe) salt water vinyl wind checks that look nice.
