Hi all,

What thread size do you recommend for saltwater rods? The recommendations that I'm hearing is to use 'C' or 'D' and can use 'A' if your a more experience rod builder. I'm making rods for the 15lbs to 30lbs line weight. Also, would 'A' size thread hold up to heavy fishing ie. tuna?

A would probably be fine if it only had to hold the guildes. In saltwater I find that rods get kicked and banged and knocked around and the wraps sometimes get scrapped or torn. For that reason I use D thread as it gives me a bit more abrasion resistance. C would be a good compromise but I don't find it much anymore. D works fine for me and looks fine too.

I use only A thread for all three wraps and coat the first two wraps with a light coat of epoxy. All my rods are for saltwater fishing off San Diego and Mexico. Have wrapped everything from light bait sticks to heavy trolling rods using A. Using A gives you a much finer look and the guides are slimmer. Strength is not an issue, never had a failure-someone on another board did a test using A and the guides bent before the thread broke. Once you use A, everything else looks like rope. The guys mass-producing rods like C & D cause its easier and quicker to wrap-JMO
PS-A looks much better in diamond wraps and weaves also
