Sanding Trim Rings Flush With Cork

I'm havingt a bit of a problem I hope some of you folks can help me with. I'm experimenting with adding trim materials to cork ring handles for turning on my mandrels. I've tried neoprene washers, cork/rubber gasket material, and
today some craft foam about 1/8" thick. Problem is when I sand these materials, they tend to stand somewhat proud of the cork, i.e., I'm having trouble getting the rings absolutely flush with the cork, and can see and feel a slight ridge.

Any suggestions? Tomorrow I'm going to a plastic store and seek out some scraps of relatively soft, sandable plastic sheet to give that a try. Trick seems to be finding something relatively the consistency of the cork. The craft foam seems a bit soft, and I'm guessing the sandpaper is slightly compressing it so that it can spring back once the pressure on the turning cork is released.

Thanks for any help anyone can give. By the way, I started this hobby about 1 year ago, largely due to the wonderful information available on this board, and am loving it. I've put together 7 rods so far, all on equipment I've built through reading posts here, and it has been just great fun! Thanks to all.

Hi Charles!

Did you try sanding the grip lengthwise rather than simply applying sandpaper while it's turning? I think that's going to be your answer...

I do a lot of mixed material grips and the key is to wrap your sandpaper around a flat piece of wood before sanding and hold it flat against the grip. If you do that it shouldn't be able to sand one area lower than the other

I find witht the craft foam that by compressing the foam/cork as little as possable, and doing like Mike said. Use a flat piecw of wood with the sand paper.

As mentioned above, a sanding block and sanding lenghwise is what I do.

What I found to work is once you got it close to the finish diameter while turning, move up to a 400-600 grit paper(of course use a flat block). The key to the foam is to get it hot enough by friction to cut thru the foam and barely sand the cork.
