I measured for a Aftco swivel tip and measured far enough down the rod to allow for the depth of the tip. I measured it to be les than 28th of an inch and ordered a size 28. Today I went to put it on and it would not go all the way down on the rod and bottom out. I did not know that the swivel tip would have taper in it. The rod is 3/8" from bottoming out in the swivel tip. Re: Lesson Learned Today.

All the Aftco tops have very severe tapes on them - much more so than any of the blanks they're intended to fit. I wish they would redo their tube tapers, but after using these same tapers for the past 30 years I suppose they're pretty much set. I don't know what blank tapers they were based on originally, but I don't think those blanks have been around for a couple decades now.
Common practice over the years has been to grind a taper into the rod tip. I never liked that idea and would usually order a larger tiptop and build up the base of the rod tip with D thread (combine trim wrap and shim) to account for the taper of the tiptop. .......... Re: Lesson Learned Today.

I was thinking about grinding the tip as well but thought that I best not do this to a 80# planer rod that is going to be pulling a massive # 24 Old Salty. BAB THINGS COULD HAPPEN when you throw in some Braided line to the mix. OUCH!! Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
