A friend of mine would like to make a waleye fly rod as a Christmas gift for his father (good son). All I've ever done is trout. I am thinking that a 9 ft 8 wt. rod would be good. Does this sound ok? Ron Re: waleye fly rod

Ron, I have built both the 9 ft. 8 wt. and 9 ft. 7 wt. for customers for walleye rods and they love them. For large lake fishing where there could be more wind, or heavy current for river fishing, go with the 8 wt., my favorite, the St. Croix Legend. Ron - I live in Walleye country, Minnesota. I think that an 8 would be just fine. Especially if he will be fishing bigger and deeper water. I really like fishing Clousers for 'Eyes. And typically Walleyes are very bottom orientated. My 6 sometimes has trouble casting the weights required to get down where I need to be. I don't think that you would go too far wrong with a 7 either. Maybe have to ask if this rod will double duty for something else. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
