Hello all - been some time since I've been on the "board" but would like some opinions please.

I wish to use a thread wrapping finish that I can apply in thin, multiple coats. Which product produces great clarity, is non-yellowing, provides a little extra set time AND levels well. thanks very much

Well, that's about all of them, except for the yellowing part.

Any finish can be applied thinly. You can apply multiple coats or applications of any of them. As far as true non-yellowing, or the absolute least amount, I have only found 3 epoxies to fill this requirement. LS Supreme, ThreadMaster and the new Diamond II.

Permagloss is water thin, absolutely non-yellowing and actually must be applied in thin coats. You might like it. But it has a slightly different look than epoxy - not a glassy surface but more of a sparkling egg shell surface. It is the toughest finish out there, of course. But it requires many coats to build much depth.

I like using LS Supreme myself. I put on the first coat of finish and then work off the excess till the threads are just covered. Makes it very easy to get rid of the bubbles if they form. Then I apply the needed amount of thin coats to get the finish I desire. For most of my rods, being for bass fishing, the guides usually only need 2 coats of finish. On the decorative wrap if I have one, it may take 3 coats, but the majority of times it is only 2.

Robin. My current favorite is Klass Kote epoxy paint, pot life of about 3 hours, longer with a little reducer added. It takes 3 coats to cover A thread if you apply immediately after mixing. Let the 2nd batch sit for 45 minutes and you can do it in 2 coats. Easier still is Wipe on polyurethane, but it will take about 8 coats to cover the threads. Permagloss sets up way to fast for my recommendation.

I would say, hands down, it's Threadmaster!!!!!

Mike Sledden has given you a good way to get what you want. Mainly do not put the first coat on to thick just enough to cover and saturate the threads. Then the second coat is a snap to build the finish shape you want. Careful mixing of most all finish epoxies and application will give you a bubble free finish. All finishes will self level if not applied to thick . How thick they can be applied is a function of the epoxies formulation. LS supreme is formulated for your specification. U-40 LS High Build is formulated for a one coat wrap finish but it can be applied thinly too. Both have excellent pot life. If I can be of any help let me know. Have fun building rods.

I just tried threadmaster on my third rod, it is real real clear, and it goes on real smooth. I can only compare it to flex coat light, and it is much better IMO....I didn't try any others yet.
