Thanks Mark

Mark,

This Burnt Cork is not actually "burned". It is treated chemically. I doubt you can replicate it in your shop. (But do not be discouraged from trying some stains or the like - you might teach us all something.)

There are some old pieces of burnt cork or burnt cork grips that show up once in a while. You can also occasionally find them on older rods that may be in a garage sale bin now. Zebco used the heck out of them during the late 1970's on their ProStaff rods. If you can get them off, you can make use of them by cutting for trim rings.

Judging by the continued requests for burnt cork, it would nice if someone could turn some up somewhere. I suspect some old dusty tackle shop somewhere, that once sold rod building supplies might have some lying around. But I wouldn't know where to tell you to start looking.

Hi Tom
I was planing to call you and thank you for printing the picture of my Steelhead rod , I did not take the pictures with the weaved jumping Steelhead, it was Tom Greek in nashville because I know my pictures stink I can can Do anything with threads but i suck with a camera.
I stained cork already , even made the stain thinner with alcohol but you can't sand it.
I'm still trying to get good pictures I do have 3D jumping Bass etc. and extreme Wraps, as the last one with the maze in the centerI also found a new way to get an extreme deep effect with a simple wrap.
I love your Magazine.

Tom,

Would you happen to know the chemical process used to produce the burnt cork?

Not exactly. At least, not well enough to do it and have something that looks like burnt cork. Sorry.
