Grinding Black Guides

I'm kinda question happy lately. I'm building a rod using Nylon and no CP as an overwrap with black guides. The grinded portion of the guide needs to be colored with a black marker.

Now what - do you apply a coat of CP, or nail polish to seal teh marker and to ensure it doesn't run when the epoxy is applied? Or do you just go ahead and wrap over teh it with nothing to seal the marker. I've tried the CP method in the past, and I had problems when I had to back off of a wrap do to a professional overrun or just a plain screw-up while inlaying a thread. The CP rubs off of the guide. And I do clean the guide after grinding with alcohol.

For those that just wrap the guide with no CP or nail polish - has the marker eever ran into the finish?

Thanks again, Billy

I use a Sharpie black permanent marker with no CP. My epoxy has never caused any problem but I guess you should test your brand of finish on a treated guide foot just to see.

Billy,

You've got the right idea. Most varnishes will not cause the Sharpie marker to run or fade. Neither will the epoxies. But if you're worried about it, just coat the guide feet with lacquer (head cement) or color preserver. It works quite well.

For us the answer is a black permanent marker, "suitable for laundry marking" , but with at least an hour to dry.

I like to use use acrylic paints (the kind you get at craft stores in little plastic bottles for under a dollar). It can be thinned with water; and you can match the blank color if you wish. I havent tried it with water base CP 'cause I prefer acetate CP.

Same problem with using the black markers here. I now use the black enamel paints in those little tin cans for plastic aircraft modelling. They sure last, that must be 20 years old when I was a boy. I just use a tooth pick as an applicator.
