I don't know much about picking guide sizes for fly rods but I'm going to build a flyrod on a Rainshadow IF907 for speckled trout fishing. I will be using Fuji Alconite guides but don't know what sizes or how many. Any suggestions on this and/or experience with this set up? Thanks, Steve Re: guide sizes for Rainshadow blank

I don't think I would go any smaller than a #7, although you might try it with #6's just to see if it will work out. If so, so much the better. Probably start with a high frame #12 or #16 (test cast and use the smallest that gives the best results - if the 16 doesn't gain you anything, stay with the 12). From there would quickly drop down to the smallest guides you plan on running. Maybe, 12 - 10 - 8 - and then 7's on out. If you start with a 16 go 16 - 12 - 10/8 - 7's on out. On a 9 foot fly rod you will likely need 9 or 10 guides plus a top. ......................... Re: guide sizes for Rainshadow blank

I agree with Tom.. rule of thumb false cast it and pretend you are striping line go 1 inch above where your hand hits the rod. this is where you put the stripping guide.. Email Dick French from Clemoens he builds one @#$%& of fly rod. His email is.......is.......dfrench@clemenstackle.com <[email protected]> Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
