I am about to fit the reel seat wood spacer to the blank - I have made the wood spacer i.d. so that it is slightly larger (fits almost) than the blank o.d. - but should there be some space between blank and spacer and if so then how much ? thank you Peter Re: Wood spacer fitting

You always want your parts to fit closely. If you have some space, then you'll want to take it up. A spiral wrap of A or D or even E size thread might be all you'll need. Or perhaps some double or triple wrapped thread bushings if the space is a bit more. You can alter the inset ID to get the rod balance you are after. Making a larger bore and taking it up with lightweight bushings lightens the rear of the rod. Making the ID smaller and having more wood there increases weight in that area and helps balance longer rods. Don't overlook this when making your inserts. It's another trick many custom rod builders use for balancing the rod. One thing to keep in mind with wood inserts is that it does absorb moisure to some extent. This means it changes size slightly depending upon the environment in which it is in at any given time. Unlike many other materials, wood "moves". For this reason many will tell you that you don't want it snug on the blank. They feel that if it swells, the inside diameter closes and the blank could be compromised. I won't disagree, but in all my years of making wood inserts I have yet to have one crush a blank. ........................ Re: Wood spacer fitting
