Robert, I have built several rods for Alvey reels and that is all that I use for surf fishing. If you will go to the Alvey web site (type alvey reels into search) they provide instructions online and will send you information.
Hope this helps

Robert, try [www.fishingmonthly.com.au] - the home page for Queensland Fishing Monthly. Have a look in Rod Builders Corner and you will find a couple of recipes which might help to answer some of your questions.

Robert depending on the type of rod blank you choose but i prefer a fast action or top one third. 12 ft is a good leanght for all alveys any longer and you will loose distance. Guides i use are BSVLG in 10,12,16,20,40 high rise guides. Reel seat is a 32 fuji any thing else and the alvey will get side ways rock. Keep the rear grip very short say around 8 inches total and foregrip at what ever you like just dont make it to bulky.
