Though I have several CA finished reel seat inserts installed on fly rods, with no problems, this insert experienced multiple fractures while in storage. My only guess is that the moisture content of the wood changed resulting in either slight shrinkage or expansion. The other side has twice this number of cracks.

I have had this occur on several seats. I now only use stabilized wood as it seems to move less. I hate seeing this after all that turning and finishing work.

Not a great loss. This insert was among several seats used to experiment with finishing techniques. I'm drifting away from CA and toward more durable, yet flexible finishes.

Thanks for the information. I've always wondered if CA might do this but haven't experienced it yet.

I haven't had this problem with CA yet. It looks like the cracks are following the end grain of the burl. It could be possible that the end grain absorbed more of the CA leaving it thinner in spots. When the blank dries down like cement it will crack where it's weakest. You may want to experiment and put a thicker coat of CA on and see if it happens again.

The CA coating on my inserts is quite thick. I turn the wood to ~0.015 below final dimension, then build up CA to 0.015 above final dimension. This is lathe sanded (wet) and polished down to the dimension required for the nickel hardware. I perform the same process with thinned moisture cure urethane (thinned to ensure no bubbles are entrapped). The final product looks similar but the MCU retains flexibility yet is very tough. Permagloss is an example of MCU.

I have also been using urethane. The last few seat were coated with Lumiseal. Looks really good I find it easier to apply compared with CA
