again as i stated these devices were designed and built over 30 yrs ago and were used primarily with white or yellow nylon to form the translucent sections of tartan style patterns, most of the tension is applied with the fingers, usually laying 5-10 threads at a time, personally i've found very little need for backwinding and the large plastic washers against the sides of the spools keeps the threads on the spool. the length of the threaded rod allowed for two of the old gudebrod styrofoam 100 yrd spools and joy had one of these loaded with each color that he used, i've got 4 of them that he gave to my partner and myself before he moved from Destin Fl to Birmingham Ala. Joy Dunlap is a rodbuilding pioneer , he and his former partner, Al Clark, were responsible for my early interest in custom rods and i built my first rods at 13, after spending hours watching them. i feel like these devices are something that are much more valuable than the sum of their parts or their practical use, to me they are heirlooms.
