This is a grip I made and the customer decided he didn't like it. It is Cocobolo on the ends with maple and walnut trim and spalted black tupelow in the center. It has a small punky area and two tiny worm holes. (pink circles)The grip is right at 6 1/2 inches long.

What's not to like? That's beautiful. Punky spots and small voids only makes the piece more interesting in my opinion. This is a fantastic grip.

Your "customer" must be crazy because that thing is GORGEOUS!

Very nicely done by the way. Most people I know would LOVE to have a grip like that on their custom rod.

What's not to like? I doubt anything would make that customer happy. Surely those tiny flaws (if you want to call it that) could be filled/smoothed and one more coat of finish or just buffed.
I am jealous.

Fishing for brook trout in New Mexico around Ruidoso. Small Sage TXL 3wt rod so that is why the grip is short. The punky areas were hardened and the holes sealed...they will never be a problem. He just didn't like the spalting.

The spalting is what makes it so nice IMHO.
