New furnace filter taped to BACK of cheap box fan and placed backwards against the lathe so the dust is pulled in to it. Insert is 2 month old filter. I just vacuum with shop vac until it gets to bad. Very Effective!! (Got the idea from Tom Kirkman) P.S. That's my Assistant!!

Only thing I'd add is that to have this work well builders need to buy a good filter - a standard ultra-cheap furnace filter won't trap much fine dust. Get a 3M Filtrete filter. They come in 3 grades. The middle one seems to be fine and will still allow the fan to maintain good airflow. Like Mike says, just vacuum it off when it gets dirty. One filter should last a pretty good while. I think they're still under about $15.

Oops! Forgot to mention that! It is a 3M Filtrete (middle grade $9)

Nice to see the box fan filter in action. I read Tom's article but haven't done it yet. Thanks for the photos, Mike, and filter info Tom.

Works great! Salvation Army fan for $5 and a $10 filter once in awhile. Vacuuming the surface of the filter with a shop vac works well

Myles, Do you have a yellowtail?? Awesome Bird! We raised the Mullucan from an egg!
Yellow tails are only 4 or 5 inches bigger than a Mullucan

Mike - looking at the filter in your picture makes me "cringe". There was a post the other day about a "gnat" in someones finish. If that "gnat" had landed on your filer before trampling the new finish on a rod he could have done some serious damage! Keep the EPA out of your shop. They may attempt to close you up due to possible exposure to asbestosis, molditus, corkolorosis, graphiteoidaphebia or glassitosis. The fine could force you to raise your prices!

One more thing: The previous picture you had posted of the lathe in your shop was green. The one in the picture with the filter is red! Wassa deal - how many you got - send me one if you have a few laying around!
