L-R: Andy Renzetti, Buddy Owens, Don Morton at the shop in 2001. Most of the well known and popular thread art we know today was being done by Buddy back in the 50's and 60's before there was any instructional information available on thread art. Many of his patterns remain unique and have never been done by anyone else.

There are a few rod builders I know that I would truly consider master rod builders. Buddy is one of them. Tomorrow Sammy Mickel and I are going to try and catch him at home. If Sammy can distract him long enough, I plan to pull out my camera with a macro lens and shoot some of his thread-work. Most of it has never been photographed. Each of his customers received their own unique thread pattern, not to be used on anyone else's rod. Over the years he's done thousands and all with either 00 or A thread. (One of the reasons I plan to shoot with a macro lens.)

He'll never take any good photos of his own stuff, so I'll have to. We'll see how good Sammy is at causing a distraction. The thread work is so intricate and the designs within the diamonds and squares so small, that it will take a macro to really show the detail.

I've been waiting for this for a while now. Looking foward to it. If Sammy does a good job, I'll buy him a beer or a coffee or wahtever he drins in Charlotte. The Pressure is on

I hear the theme to Mission Impossible playing in the background. Good luck getting the pictures.
