This insert is made from Chechen, and is finished using the same technique I use with CA, and others use with Tru-Oil. Successive coats are built to beyond disired diameter, then wet sanded with progressively finer sandpaper followed by wet 8000 & 12000 Micromesh. Final Step is a heavy cut car polish followed by a scratch & swirl remover.

Jeff I've often wondered about using Permagloss for inserts. It looks like it really does a nice job of protecting the wood and has a great shine.

Thanks Mark,
I found it to be less problematic than CA. The initial block sanding to get to level went well, and I didn't run into the clumping (white flecks) that can occur with CA. I waited four days after the last application before sanding on the lathe. Five coats were applied over a 24 hour period.

Yes Sam, I'm very happy that I saw your thread. It put me on track to substitute Permagloss for CA. I plan to create a tutorial for those who might want to give it a try. It will take quite a few photos to go through the application process, multiple coats, then the lathe sanding and polishing process. Maybe this weekend.

For anyone considering building up coats of Permagloss then sanding and polishing to fit specific hardware: Bubbles in the finish are your enemy. This past week I did a couple more inserts with Permagloss and must have applied my second or third coat before the prior coat had time to completely off-gas. I had 40-50 bubbles form on one insert, and the result was 40-50 white spots (small craters filled with white Permagloss dust). By the time I sanded through the bubbles I was into the wood. Each application must be allowed to cure adequately and any bubbles that form as a result of the Permagloss application must be burst or brushed off the end of the reel seat insert. The inserts that worked out have a better overall appearance than the ones finished with CA.
