This one I just ended up using the dowl method. Next time I will definately use a metal mandrel or look into the pen building tools. This one must be done by the 5th.

No Mike, I meant: What lathe set-up did you end up going with, you never said. Sorry, I should have been clearer.

I used my dad's old shop smith lathe. I just glued up my blocks then drilled out the center hole with an extra long spade bit. The hole on the foregrip turned out off center but the lathe took it out. I just mounted the grips on to a wooden dowl and ran them down to size. It took forever becuase the Zebra wood is incredibly hard!

If the ShopSmith is the "all in one", then you have all the hardware you need for any wood work to be done dealing with rod building. You might want to invest in a self centering chuck to fit the lathe headstock, and get some of Andy Dears mandrels to use for turning your handles. Prebore your blanks to 1/4" then you can use the Flex Coat Pilot spade bits for boring perfectly centered every time. They even have a kit with instructions to make your own. One note there: instead of using Rod Bond or 2 part epoxy glue to attach the small piece of tubing, I use JB weld. Holds up to the heat created wayyyy better!!! Awesome first grip!! I see you becoming an artist in grip building, on the level of Mark Blabaum and others here. Sorry misspelled the last neme, it's fixed now.

Mike, it's very nice work indeed. It becomes addictive after the first one and then you can't seem to stop. If you look under gallery's and Mark it should come up. If you want drop me an e/mail I have a couple of tutorials on segments if you want mark@hallada.com.
