For a first attempt this is very, very good. In fact, it would still be very good for a 3rd or 4th attempt, or 5th, or 6th.

Thanks! I think this is going to be an nice gift for my brother. I will post pics of the completed rod when I get it done. Hopefully you will be able to see them before the 5th.
