I hate to post this next to Jorges black widow. The latest build on a St Croix SCIV, the treads are all maderia. The grip is a experiment; the cork on the ends is copano, but the center web section is made from a cork yoga block that I cut up. The finish is Arm R Seal. It's a thinner varnish type finish that holds up better than Tru-Oil in my experience. I built the rod for myself so we'll see how well the cork holds up this summer.

Not to hate for this Mark. I'd like to have that grip for my widow. I'm jealous. Great job all around. Cheers.

Your thread work is coming along nicely and the grips, well, that goes without saying! Jorge's spider is enough to humble anyone!

Mike, the yoga block is somewhere between burl and regular cork. It seemed a little easier to turn than burl, but it didn't tear out like regular cork when you used a tool to turn it. The yoga block used in segmenting looks like natural cork, but by it's self used as a block for a grip with out being cut and segmented it looked a little off (not like the cork you see on a normal grip). There are some larger chunks of cork in the yoga block that make it look inconsistant. I did find that the web is lighter than it would have been if I used burl as well. The black between the segments is dyed black veneer and I used Arm-R-Seal to seal the cork. It's like a spar varnish only thinner, it darkened the burl and yoga block a bit and will help protect it. I like the overall look of the yoga block when it's used like this. Best part is the block is less than $20.00 and I can get 3-4 grips made out of it. Here's what they look like before being cut up [ link ] . Like I said before it's not for every body or all uses, but it has some possibilitys. Ladd F was going to try wood burning designs into the blocks, it has possiblitys (and some limitations) we just need more people to mess around with it.
BTW, Mike I think that there's more fiber in the yoga blocks, the dog should be able to pass this one a little easier (lol).
