Its hard to say but do to it's size, looks more like a gray reef shark than a BT, but is a darn nice catch regardless.

I have one other pic I can post where you can maybe see it better - it is definitely different than the run of the mill BTs and Bulls we normally catch. Any ID help is appreciated.
I really don't care what it is - there is nothing like getting hooked up with one from the beach! Great fun and a great test of tackle. Now, if we can just settle down the mothers...

Bill that is a Sandbar Shark distinguished from that tall dorsal fin.
Great catch. I lived in Pensacola for 4 years and never caught one of those, but caught dozens of Blacktip Sharks.
Here is a link for you to take a look at [ link ]

If this was caught in the northeast, I'd say a very large sandbar/brown shark. Not sure if you have them in Florida? Hard to tell by the pics but a fine surf rod catch by all means.

Thanks, Toby and Scott. Now that you point it out you can really see that high sail dorsal fin in the third photo.
I just love that the angler looks more tired than the shark...LOL. Great shark and awesome sport. There is nothing more exciting (to me) than sharks from the beach. And this thing was caught on a 5" finger mullet about 20 yards from the beach! It's like catching a 30" trout on a size #28 midge one rod length away. At least it's that close when you set the hook...awesome.

Dave, this all started 5 years ago when we were on a big family vacation in Destin. My mother and father-in-law rented a condo on the top floor at Silver Shells facing the beach. Every day we'd go up there at 5:00 or so for cocktails before heading out to dinner. My brother and I were slack jawed at the number and frequency of BIG sharks (easily visible with the naked eye from 35 stories up - 6 foot plus) swimming between the shore and the swimmers. And nobody noticed a thing. We were out there the next day and got our butts kicked with our Ambassadeur 4600s and Curados. I think we broke one rod and melted down two reels getting freight trained on live mullet and cut ladyfish. We agreed that he'd buy the reels, I'd build the rods, and we'd be back. We're getting there. I think we've put about 30 fish over 6' on the beach so far. Of course, we have regular conversations around Seaside and Grayton Beach with the Walton County Sheriff's Deputies...nothing like putting a shark on the beach in front of a multi-million dollar home to get some attention. They are super nice guys but have to fly the flag - every morning - to keep the call traffic down. And of course there are the ones who took 500 yards of mono and braid and never even slowed down a bit...
