I was lucky enough to get some wood from BD Ehler, and Doc Ski. The top grip is made from a piece of BD's Pecan burl. The grip is made out of one piece of wood; the fore grip has a piece of the burl exposed in it. The reel seat is a very dark piece that came out of the same blank. The rear grip has a cocobolo elliptical and really shows the figure of the wood. The lower grip is Doc's Koa and has been on here before, but I really like the look of the two grips together. It will be hard to separate the two.

Guy's Thanks for the kind words. I really enjoy working with odd (read different) types of wood. BD and Doc were kind enough to send me some wood that they had. The Koa that Doc sent me was from a friend that he has in Hawaii, the color and curly undertones make the grip beautiful by itself. BD was good enough to send me a care package that was full of different woods and the first that caught my eye was one marked diseased pecan burl. All the different colors in the top grip came from one piece of wood; it ranged from dark brown (almost black) to very light tan with great figure. The pecan was also water cured a process where he soaks it in a barrel of water for 6 months and then air dries for 6 months to a year. The water cured wood was lighter than I expected as some of the resins in the wood are washed away in the curing process. It was also very hard, my saw blade can attest to that (my shop was filled with smoke when I tried to cut it). I really would like to say Thanks to BD and Doc for the chance to try something new.
