Joe has written an article on how to make such seats. It's in the new issue of RodMaker and is quite well done. Photos don't really do them justice, however.

Thanks for the great Rodmaker article. Two questions: 1. How much does it cost total for the molds/etc, for someone who is starting from ground one. (me).

2. These have to be turned on an actual lathe I'm assuming? I've never used one, only have my Pac-Bay Rodsmith rod wrapper, which I don't think will work.

You will need something fairly decent to turn them on - the polyester casting is pretty hard and somewhat brittle. We're going to do a follow up article on how best to turn them - tools, speeds, etc.

The cost to do these is fairly small. The supplies won't cost much, the mold is a tupperware container, the form is a piece of brass tube. Not hard, not expensive, but very impressive. Joe's article is very well written and easy to follow. Turning is the hardest part but once you've done one or two you'll have the hang of it.

Thanks guys. Phil the cost of a gallon of resin and catalyst is $33 plus shipping. Molds are under $3. Brass tubing about $2.50 per foot. A gallon of resin will make at least 15 inserts. Cost per insert is extremely reasonable. The article has all the suppliers listed with websites, but for under $50 you can get started. I agree with Tom. You need a woodworking lathe to turn them.

Man, that makes me want to go back home to rattle snake country. That is nice! I once asked my dad what rattlesnake tasted like and he looked at me kinda funny and said, "Snake."

That is freaking awsome! I assume there's a seem on the under side or under the reel foot?

Steve, there is a seam, and it gets positioned under the reel foot as you stated. The article explains that. Glad you like it.

Joe's inserts are so well done you would have a hard time finding the seam unless you knew to look for it. Sort of like matching wallpaper seams.
