These are the newly-designed rods I made for my 7 and 5 year old girls. I originally started them off with small pistol grip handles and standard Zebco spincast reels but they were uncomfortable and their weak wrists were constantly fighting the heavy reels' tendency to roll over on them. This design works much better for them and it is just as easy for them to cast using the finger "trigger" as it is the push button type. Both rods have already proven themselves on the bluegills this spring. My 7-year old caught a 15" largemouth on hers already. Both rods are 1pc. 4'6" long UL power.

Glad to help - have fun with the projects and your granddaughters. I really think this is the best of both worlds for teaching kids to fish. You get fewer birdsnests just like a push-button type spincast, but the rod is much more stable and comfortable in their hands. As Mike suggests, this design makes a fun panfish or trout outfit for an adult too. These are just $10 Shakespeare reels but they can really cast a long way with a small bobber, #8 hook and small piece of nightcrawler. These came spooled with 4lb. mono. On the front of the reel seat, I installed a rubber butt plug with a hole drilled through it to match the diameter of the blank. Does a nice job of giving a finished look and clean junction with the hookkeeper wrap. Grips are each turned from 2 champagne corks.
