Thanks for the comment, the wood is Black walnut.The finish is 10 very light coats of spar varnish, sanded between each coat.Its a process that gunstock manufactures used back in the day.Most finishes are machine applied now.I also found that Black walnut is somewhat caustic and polys don't dry as well on them as varnish or oil finishes.

David I used a two part rod builders thread sealer epoxy, after I hollowed out the butt and painted black.
