The top rod was built on one of Andy's trash can rods. It's made of mesquite and trimmed with corian. The reel seat is Rosewood. The lower grip is made of Ancient Kauri that is over 50,000 years old from New Zealand. The reel seat is Kauri quartered with a checker installed (I know a relapse). It's very brittle wood, but has a very nice look in the sunlight. The mesquite was from Jim Ellis, and Garry L was good enough to provide me with the Kauri.

Nice grip Mark. Where have you been getting your corian from? Also, what material are you using between the corian and the wood?

Absolutely stunning work Mark. Keep your relapse happening because your checkers set the work of beautifully.

Mark and Jim Thanks for the kind words. Jim, the corian I bought off line and I don't have the address in front of me right now. I have his e/mail address at work and will try to e/mail you tomorrow with his info. The black between the corian and wood is Dyed Black wood veneer purchased from Woodcraft. I think that the black line really sets off the other components in the grips. Thanks Again MB.

Those are two of the most beautiful handles that I have ever seen. I never thought that I would like mesquite. My father made a living "fighting mesquite" on ranches in West Texas. During the summers my father would strap a spray can on my back and I would walk miles spraying the small trees to kill them. If left unchecked, mesquite will take over a pasture in no time.

Putter, Stan, Ellis, and John; Thanks for the compliments. John the Kauri is available in the US, from of all places Wisconsin (Ancientwood LTD - Lapointe, WI). The web site for the wood is [ link ] the history on the wood is very interesting. The Kauri tree is protected in New Zealand, but they have wood that they have been digging up that was buried in peat bogs over 50,000 years ago and you can still work it. The picture doesn't do the blank justice it almost has an iridescent look in the light very interesting stuff to work with. Ellis the story of spraying mesquite is a hoot. I would imagine that the last thing you would want to see is more mesquite (for us as kids it was thistles) LOL.

Interesting site. I'd like to see that wood in person, adn check to see if you sanded it to 1200 grit the way they say you should.
