I fill the space between the hoods with cork tape turned sideways and trimmed to fit..held in place with contact cement. The blank under the tape fore grip is built up to make the tape even with the end of the reel seat..results in a very comfortable seat.

I don't do surf rods, but that's a cool idea, and a very nice look. Really cleans up the lines nice! Something for me to jot down if I ever do something like that.

Very cool. I do the same with wood and cork inserts for skeleton pipe seats. I agree that modified this way, the seats are super comfortable.
