A suggestion that I'd like to offer is the replacement of nut and wingnut with an office spring clip. They're usually black metal with two chrome plated levers that you use to open the loaded spring clip. The second smallest size usually fits nicely on the diameter of all thread used for thread spools. For more information do a search on my name and you will find more. If you're interested I can send a photo.

Scott, you might want to have the large washers right next to the ends of the thread spool on both ends, to help thread from wrapping on to the threaded shaft. I found a few nylon washers that fit into the washer on the outter ends that help keep everything properly aligned. Only found a few such nylon washers and am looking for more.

The madeira thread has a tendency to wrap itself around the shafts at the end of spools.

Also, I found that removing the grey plastic end ring from the spool and putting the large washer right next to the thread and then putting the grey end rings back on the spool ends worked the best of all.

The binder clips that Jeff mentioned are much more user-friendly than wing nuts, IMO.
