The fly rod handle is made of Big Leaf Maple burl, the reel seat is a Alps Tri seat. The handle and the seat are probably a little large for a 5wt and the purist fly fisherman however this is only my second fly handle so I'm still learning. The Ice handle is Rosewood, Maple and Padauk with an Fuji FPS handle.

Beautiful work Mark! Really nice checkerboards. Did you use a jig or a mitre saw? I love working with Maple, makes a really classy looking rod. Just curious though, what made you choose the Alps seat over turning your own insert?
As far as the fly "purist" goes, who cares? Most of those types talk about the types of flys, waders, boots they use instead of getting out and fishing. They kinda remind me of wine snobs. A Wood grip and handle size are your decision and if it's what you want, and feels best in your hand, nothing else matters. I've made a wood handled Sage XP and some people look at me like I'm crazy adding that extra weight to a high dollar rod. It's what I wanted and it's my rod nothing else matters. I'm off my soapbox now.
Once again, very nice work.

Jay, Thanks I'm used to bass rods so I made this to fit my hand so it's about 1" at the widest part by the hand and tapers to .900 at the smallest part. The overall length is 7.5" but when I look at the high dollar rods they have such small diminutive handles. The Alp's helps to give a hard line to the wood handle and it's something you don't see every day. The checkers are made on a jig installed on a power miter box, they are two individual rings with different sized segments glued together. Billy, my wife loves to sew but doesn't know that I use her board when she's not looking, so how much would it take money wise for you not to tell her? Randy, I'm from the southwest corner of Wisconsin and love to ice fish. It doesn't show on the picture but I built in one of St. Croix's spring bobbers as well. With the winter we've had this year I haven't had a chance to use it. Ray and Mike thanks for the kind words. Mark

Excellent woodwork. The Alps reel seat gives it a classic look. You could also have turned an insert out of gaboon ebony to get the same effect. Great Job!
