The checker is made of Padauk and White Ash. I don't know if I would use Ash again as it has a grain that shows up when tru oil is applied. This one looks more like a cog than a checker. The cork is Copano on a Shikari PP703.5 blank.

Looks really nice Mark. Hope to meet you in High Point. I am new in wood turning and can use all the pointers as much as possible.

Mike - I'm putting the epoxy on this rod tonight so I can bring this rod with me to NC. I should have several checkers in different stages put together by the end of next week for you. The room is booked so I will see you there. Mark

Just wondering about the order of things - did you turn the wood down to size, then glue up with the rings and sand cork to match? Or all at once? Looks great, by the way, and I would consider the ash grain a plus, at least from the pic.

David - You are correct, I do turn the wood down to size and taper first and then epoxy it to the rings. I then turn the rings down close to the size of the wood trim and finish with a skew before I sand. I find the skew helps to keep a ridge from building up in the transition from wood to cork. Thanks for the kind words. Mark

Cog instead of checkerboard, I dunno, but I like it!! Looks pretty sharp if I do say so.
