I just finished this split grip with burl cork from Janns Netcraft and checkers made of Wenge and Maple. The other checker is rough turned to be used on a handle for a 5wt that I'm building. The rod is a St Croix Elite EC66MF and a gift for Christmas.

Nice work Mark!! What tool/jig do you use to get such a nice fit on the checkers?

Jerry - I made a jig for my power miter saw that's basically an L shape with 2 pieces of wood. I just screwed them together and made an arm of wood to hold the work piece and keep my fingers out of the way. You can make any amount of checkers as long as the total of the angles comes out to 360 deg. I glue two 3/16" thick colors of wood together and rip them to about 3/4" wide and then cut them on the jig. These particular checkers came from a 10 degree cut. BTW you need a very sharp and fine blade on the power mitre saw.

Mark - Thanks for the reply. I am trying to visualize the process, but it's not altogether clear yet. Any chance you could email a few pics of the process?

That is one of the best pieces of rod work that I have seen in nearly 30 years of rod building. Keep up the good work, Mark.

Thanks Ellis - I never tried to do a checker untill I saw Eden B's work on this site. I love to turn pens and that's great practice for turning handles.

Wow!!! Great checkers. Wish mine would turn out that good or even close. I'd like to see how you have done these. Overall, a nice grip.
