Saw a post about load it takes to pull a guide. This is on a spiral wrapped SWB70H trimmed. This happened with an approx 70lb yellow fin on. The failure was caused by impacting the gunnel while the guide was under tension. Wrap did not fail, guide was pulled from under wrap after frame was distorted. Unfortunatly, the foot knicked the line and cut off the fish.

So it was simple abuse and not material or workmanship failure that caused the problem.

That's correct. I posted this as an illistration of a "pulled" guide. Had absolutley nothing to do with the size of thread, etc., The reaction from the user is usually how to make this system stronger. It certainly wouldn't help to use thicker thread. These are the kinds of failures I see with salt water stand up tackle. All due to the "fishing environment" and not the fish.

Reinforces the point that A thread is more than strong enough since it appears that even with the twisting/deforming, the thread never broke. Shame about the fish, though!

I just finished a 30 lb. standup rod and before I started I discussed doing a spiral wrap with Doc Ski. This rod will be used primarily on a party boat. My fear about the spiral wrap was that sometimes you slam the rod down on the rail when a large fish sounds. Doc Ski agreed that you could damage the guides if one is not careful or caught off guard. I wound up wrapping the guides on top and installing a good gimbal.

Funny that today I had a TLNSG guide pull out of the wraps. NOt sure how, but I do know those tiny feet are too short for teh rods I am putting them on, so I'm going to look into TNSG's from now on. Why aren't there any TMNSG's, geez.

There is something that I can not see in the picture - did it stretch cracking the finish and allow the foot to pull out from under or is the thread actually torn through? Thanks for sharing.

Bill, the thread is not torn. The sequence of how it pulls out...one of you engineer types is going to have to figure that out. I'd really like to replace all of the guides with turbos, but this rod is one of a set of three that I gave to my buddy when he bought his boat 3 years ago. Way too much work for this inexpensive (shhh, don't tell him) rod.
Ellis, this is the downside of the spiral wrap. This rod is fished out of a center console, offshore. Standup fishing on a small boat while its rocking has its challanges - but they have held up this long
