Ray--From what I was told, the bamboo tips would take a set after being used for a few hours, and by putting on the double guide it would allow you to just flip over the tip section and continue fishing. Don't know how true the infomation was, but maybe some one with a better memory than I will chim in and help out.

Fred, you are absolutely correct in your guess. I am a collector of split bamboo rods and have several like this one. They build the rod so that when it would start to stay bent in the direction you had been using it you could flip the tip over and bend it back straight. The tip usually is a full circle at the top so you can fish the rod from either direction when you flip it.

You can straighten a split bamboo rod with hot steam, but be careful wth putting the steam directly onto the rod. It is best done when you can heat the rod in a steam box then take it out and put it into a mold that strightens the rod. I love split bamboo rods and have a couple I actually fish with. The split bamboo fly rod I fish with will wear your shoulder out after a while.
