James and Alan Thanks much. Alan the I got lucky on the Curly Maple (light colored wood) and found a blank that was much lighter and more figure than the others in the bin so the weight isn't to bad. It's still more than cork but it's on a 7' rod and doesn't balance to bad. The red colored wood is Padauk, the lighter black is Wenge, The reel seat is rosewood. I made a jig for my power miter saw and made 18, 10 degree pies out of Wenge and Maple. I like the looks of the 10 degree cuts over the larger 22.5deg checkers but it's hard to get 18 pieces together at the same time.
