LOL yes, but for this application the shorter the better. Here's the scenario. A 16 or 24 planer takes alot of drag to pull at close to 7kts. Typically 80 class reels are used and the drag is bumped up to 50+ pounds at times. Behind the big planer is a leader that is 100+ feet long. The planer is rigged on a harness so that it can be snapped off and the leader wound onto the reel. This is where the short rod comes into play. In this type of fishing the rod never leaves the rodholder. When the planer comes up the mate can easily reach it via the short rod. He unsnaps and the angler reels in the WAHOO. Jay

Those 2 guides probably eat up 1/4 of a 1oz spool, lol. You do whachoo gotta do ta put fish inta da boat. I hope someone tells you you should spiral wrap it so the blank doesn't fail, lmao!

Honestly, Steve...24 hours after receiving my parts delivery I had that rod put together and four coats of epoxy applied. So you're correct...it did take a day.

Jay....will this rod be for fighting the fish or is it just for trolling the planer? I've never done that kind of fishing.

BTW, Nice work on the rod! Wink

You can do it one of two ways Steve. The first is to run the in-line planer like I described above allowing you to snap the planer off when it comes up. In this case the rod is used to 'fight' the fish...although there won't be much fight to it. This is a MEAT rod like I said. The other way is to set the planer on the rod and run the bait line down the planer line via a snap and rubber band. When the fish hits the rubber band breaks and the fish is on a separate rod...much like a downrigger. Downriggers don't work well at dead bait speeds (too much blowback). Hence the popularity of big planers.

Thanks for the explaination Jay! I guess I should've said "to haul the fish in" instead of "fighting the fish". LOL
