Bill S asked if my son and I use the fancy rods I build on our trips. OF COURSE we do!! This pic shows the phoenix tat on my sons back the the same phoenix woven in the middle of the butt wrap on his rod. I've previously posted pics of the phoenix weave. He gets many comments on the weave when folks notice the same phoenix on his back. Great fun to watch him fish.

How long is that stick? Are most of the rods on the long range boat that long?

That rod is his 8' jig rod for throwing iron. Most are 6.5 to 7'for bait fishing.

Boy would I just love to make a trip out there. Just the name of the fish, styles and tactics would be worth the trip for me. Throwing "iron" is a mystery to me. We catch bait (hardtails) on that type of rod with the Japanese Sabiki Rigs jigging. I was wondering if he was using that for yellowfin! Did you see any rail rods on board. I am really thinking about installing a short piece of slick butt in front of the reel seat for that purpose. I am totally blown away hearing that you can make several trips a year like that. My 70 mile run, fish 8 hrs, 70 mile run, clean fish, clean boat days with no place to stay except the bunk on the cat are numbered - your trips sound like heaven to me.

Jim,
Could you recommend a good jig blank (Calstar maybe)? I've got a customer that wants a new longer jig stick. Thanks, Randy.

Randy, lots of guys like the 690J for light iron and the 90J for heavier iron, both can be trimmed if you don't want 9'. A deckhand on the American Angler several years ago jumped up on the bow anchor platform and used his 90J to cast to breaking bft and caught a 100# bft on iron with it. He landed it in about 15 minutes. He hooked another one later on and handed it off to a Navy Seal who had never fought a big fish on a long rod and the Seal got worked bigtime but got it in an hour later.
edit-forgot to mention my son's rod is an old Truline D8 that I just rewrapped for him acid style.

Jim,
I'll look into both of those blanks. Thanks very much for the info. Randy.
