This is not the rod shown on the cover of the new magazine, but a similar handle. This one filled with cash.

I'll buy that for a Dollar! (name that movie) First time I saw this idea was with a lure you put a minow into. How does the tubing hold up to abuse ie party boat buffoons kicking them around? So many Ideas.

That photo generates new ideas. Thanks for posting it. The good thing about building rods (besides building a functional rod) are all the creative ideas that folks have.

The old tubes that held minnows also had hooks mounted on them. Most are from the late 1800s. The idea was that the fish would see only the minnow and come to eat him and get the hooks on the clear tube instead. Have no idea how well they worked. They stopped making them so maybe they didn't pan out.

There are various types of clear tubing that can be used. Some won't allow you buff them back up to total clear, others aren't durable enough to be used on rod butts. A near future article will deal with all this and point out the different types and which is best for what and which can be machined/turned and brought back up to total clear. The one you see here is remarkably strong and was buffed back up from a total matte/opaque condition. There are some trim reliefs cut into the center of the grip - these weren't buffed back up and remain opaque.

Thanks Tom! This is indeed what I've been dabbling with for a long time. I was never able to make it work. Could never find material that I thought would work and/or couldn't figure out how to work some others that held promise. A guy could have a lot of fun with something like this!

I think I can now eliminate the forward piece of EVA by using a smaller ID bore on another piece of tubing, shouldered and then polished back up to clear so that it would mate seamlessly with the main clear tubing used for the foregrip. I think it will look better than having that black EVA piece at the front.

Actually I kind of like the eva look. It adds color possibilities to link back to the foregrip. JMO
