Thumbs Up Up Up! Several questions -
How many spirals were on the boat?
Most of rods on boat IGFA or fast taper standups?
Any vertical jigging rods used on boat?
Is albacore the same as blackfin?
Did you actually fish with the good looking rods with weaves?
Were you dead when you got off the boat - are the five day trips too much?
Thanks Bill Stevens

I'll guess at some of those based on what I've read on the internet. Only people using IGFA's are charters/private boats. Not many use them on PArty Boats. Vertical jigging rods have been on boats for many years, they just weren't hyped up the way they are now. Only rods to fish with are ones which have fancy weaves - why bother doign the work if you ain't gonna fish the rods. 5 day trips on those boats, might be more comfortable than you living at home.

Those guys on the West Coast really support the Long Range Tuna Boats running out of San Diego. Their tackle supposedly is unique to the area. I hoped Jim saw some sprial rollers on board to get a report. I have been around the charter business for a long long time and I have yet to see one of the Japanese Vertical Jigging Rods that are now in use. The only thing I use a jig rod for is with Sabiki rigs for is to catch bait. I use diamond jigs for amberjack but the rods are no true vertical jiggers. I can not imagine working the long jig strings of jigs in 3 or 4 hundered feet of water with a spinning reel targeting tuna. The guy with the Eastern US distributorship is Jim Reyburn in Jersey - have you seen one of the 500 gram tuna blanks?

Nice fish Jim. Looks as though you had some nice weather too. Saw BJ and Jim when they got home but didn't get a chance to talk with them.

Jim,
Your son is a nice looking young man you should be proud of him, even more proud than of those beautiful rods that you build. However, I do not let my son catch bigger fish than I do like yours apparently did. Well, I do not allow mine to very often anyway.

Bill, my son and I and maybe one other fished with spiral wrapped rods, still very rare out here. I've yet to see an Acid roller rod on a trip and have yet to build one for myself. No igfa rods used, all standup. No verticle jigging rods either that i've seen-they are in the local shops however. I have no idea what a blackfin tuna is, we don't have them here. The albacore on this trip ranged from 30 to 40#. We were well rested after our 5 day trip, we had our own stateroom which has a private freshwater sink, seperate bunks and closet. This boat has 3 hot freshwater showers/toilets so we showered every nite after a hard days fishing, then sat down to a great gourmet meal like prime rib or pork tenderloin along with breakfast, lunch and midmorning and midafternoon snacks. Its tuff not to gain weight on one of these trips. 5 day summer trips are great fun. My next trip is also a 5 day leaving sunday on a boat where my buddy and I have our own private bathroom with hot shower and toilet-like being in a hotel!!! This boat is the Excel, check it out at Excelsportfishing.com. San Diego's long range fleet is unlike anything else fishing wise in the world.

Thanks for answering all my questions. For some reason I thought the use spirals was much higher. We have a small tuna in the Gulf that looks like the picture of the albacore you posted but they don't get much over 20 lbs - we call them blackfin. Really sounds like a wonderful trip. After Katrina we have the fish but not the boats or facilities - really jealous!! Is there a pool for the largest yellowfin?

The Excel, from what I've heard from my buddies at work, is one of the finest boat out of San Diego. I've heard nothing but great things about fishing her. You are going to have a blast!
