Another pic of a spiral-wrapped Lamiglas Tri-Flex CSB138 2M at work on the beach near Seaside, Florida in early June 2006. It is essentially a modified O'Quinn spiral wrap.
In this photo, you can see the guide set up pretty clearly. By offsetting the first guide so that it intentionally stacks line toward your rod hand (in this case to the left), it makes it much easier to guide the line onto the reel. You push the line over to the right side of the spool with your left thumb and then simply relax your thumb to let it come back across. To me, this is much easier than pushing and pulling with the thumb (which would be required if the first guide was centered).
You can see all the weed that was caught on the 100 lb. shock leader knot, but the rod casts knots on shock leaders up to 130 pounds (the heaviest I test casted) without even a tick on the guides. Even though I thought size 16 running guides sounded HUGE when I first read RodMaker Volume 7 #1, test casting proved that size 16 is the magic number for passing knots. So, thanks again Tom K.
