Hey Ray! That looks pretty darn straight to me! Nice job!
I'm also new to weaving. I've found it easier to stop along the way and pull the threads in line if they start to get kinda cadywompas. The tention of the wrap thread tends to pull the design threads down. A pick can aid you after the design is done and you pull the threads to tighten and straighten things up.

Thanks, I do try to straighten them as I go, but I have pulled out threads before so I'm a little gun shy. I am designing my own jig which will keep the threads held horizontal to the blank. I'll post pictures taken from my computer screen with my design soon for all to see and comment on

Hi Ray. Keeping the threads straight is part of the beast. Remember you have constant tension pulling theads in a downward motion. With that in mind I constantly check for straightness and threads moving over each other. The most frequent problem is a pattern thread that is longer than the one directly below it(like just past the mid section of your S) for some reason it is usually the longer thread that goes over the shorter thread. I made a special tool out of a eye glass screw driver to help push threads back into line. It can be dangerous though, depending on the thread size. Too much pressure can cause it to fray or break. Patience and Practice are the keys. By the way what size threads are you using here? Overall you did a great job.

Thank you gentlemen for the encouraging remarks,I'll keep practicing and be more aware of the thread position on the blank. The thread size I used was A-size. What size thread do you recommend? or does it really matter?

I use all sizes but recently am kind stuck on 40wt Madeira for the pattern and B Sunset for the wrap. I am waiting for some B Gudebrod.

Ray; Breaking a thread though a pain isn't the end of the world. You can fix it so don't let that scare you. Part of the problem I see in your work above is in the pattern. The rest can be fixed as you tighten the threads but the cross over in the S will be a bit more difficult if you can't get the threads to pass each other. Not enough space here to explain.
