Ever wondered what to do with that extra finish when the rod is done? Tint it, add some stuff to it, pour into a candy mold and you have buttcaps. Make them smaller, drill out the center and you have winding checks (small one in center).

Great Idea, Mick!!!!!! Love it. Huess I go mold shopping tomorrow. Now you've started something!!
Do you coat the inside with finish and let it set up before you add your inlays and fill up with more finish???

Pretty much like that, Mike. Fill the molds some, let set, add object, mix up more finish and add. I've tried different methods and inlaid just about anything you can think of and haven't come up with a "wrong" way to do them. The only real trick is getting them out of the mold. Best way seems to be plastic "sword" toothpicks, using them like tire irons to "walk" around the outside, slowly peeling up more each time. Eventually they pop right out. I tried a light coat of various oils before epoxy and that was a disaster.

That's a great idea!! I thought this was one of those artist's palettes - which have a smaller recess to fill which might make it better suited for winding checks. HAve you sonsidered a release agent such as Parrifin or Silicone spray to make it easier to remove? Someone showed me that I could pour finish onto waxed paper, and when it sets up it just pops or peels off. Very unique!!

Stan, it takes a bit more than about 1cc to make one, so whatever that amount of finish weighs, plus anything you embed. I don't have an accurate scale to weigh one right now.

Billy, I picked up an artist's pallette too, which does give a bit smaller diameter and deeper fills. I tried parafin but I didn't get a glass smooth top. It left a lot of noticeable surface defects (yellow one, lower left), same as the oils I tried, plus the oils caused curing problems on the surfaces. I've been looking at the new silicone molds but haven't found any in the right size or shape yet. Next couple that I do I plan on rubbing them with one of those silicone bracelets. But once you get the hang of it, it takes less than 10 seconds to pop them out using the plastic swords.

Mick-

What effect does freezing the tray have on the buttcaps removal?

I went to get a close up of the Yellow one on teh bottom left, and just realized the Heart & pinwheel were made out of hooks. Sweet. Post a picture of them once you put it on a rod.

Super idea Mick. My taxedermy buddy does the same thing to make eyes for fish mounts and foot pads for small table mounts. I love the wind check idea.
