I had to pass on the Jet cause the dog blew out her knee. So, this is what I ended up with (Penn State drill press lathe). So far, it's the best $20 I've spent on this rodbuilding sickness I have. I guess my drillpress is now a multi-tool!

We had plans for making this in a past issue of RodMaker. There is one aspect of a vertical lathe that is very important. Never run the quill down when setting up this lathe. Always raise the table to meet the end of the mandrel. The quill should remain fully retracted, thus it cannot come loose and retract and send the end of the mandrel spinning wildly and dangerously out of control. So remember, raise the table to meet the mandrel and lock it in place securely. This is particularly important on older presses that do not have the screw raise mechanism.

Thanks for the tip Tom. I will raise the table from now on. That press is older than I am, and I could see that happening someday.

Scott, is the tool rest pretty sturdy? Been looking at my drill press with deep thought of a hinged base so that I can have not only a drill press, but a horizontal turning lathe as well...might save a few bucks.

Michael, The tool rest is very strudy. It is a 5/8" dia bar bolted to a 1/2"x3/4" base. That then is bolted to the base plate. The swing is adjustable with an allen wrwnch.
