Never tried one before, but I was asked to build a rod for my nephew on a redneck theme and thought I'd give something like this a try. This was done rather quickly, but did learn a few things and the next one should be a lot better.

Cool! Doug! Sure it's the first try? Can't wait to see it on the rod!

Doug - I think saying Redneck is not PC, you're gonna get flamed. It's really not that hard, is it? Just time consuming. IT's starts off with a 20 piece inlay, and turns into a whole 'nother animal in a short time, lol. Looking foward to the next one, as well as what you learned.

I think you captured the look pretty well, although we all know it's as much about attitude as physical appearance. Are you going to put this on a cane pole? Hey, big ears, close-set beady eyes, goofy crooked smile, shave every 3rd day out of laziness...who said you could use my likeness? I don't recall giving you permission. My lawyer (and moonshine/pork rind distributor) will be contacting you, LOL.

Thanks, guys! Billy...hard, no not really. The one thing I did learn is not to try and do to much with one piece of the inlay, and you sometimes have to put pieces together prior to them drying or you'll never get them where you want them (eg. the eyes!)Thanks for your comments, but it's still a long way from your inlay work!
Steve, I'm not sure, but we just might be kin!LOL!

The eyes are really easy to do - send me an e-mail. Too many jagged cuts and the pieces will never go together unless you are REALLY careful. Simple inlays with basic shapes are much easier to do, and in most cases the only way you can put them together. I do not like taking a solid color and cutting a hole in it, like teh way it looks like you did the mouth. I find it much easier to cut the brown into 2 pieces, a top and a bottom - glue the mouth into the top first, then teh bottom brown piece into that.

Yea, you caught me! That's' one of the lessons learned about not trying to do to much with one piece...The mouth was a b*^ch. By the time I got it done, I thought...this would of been a lot easier if I had split the jaw.

Another thing - dont' sand the inlay flat on both sides for pictures!!! lol. You NEED teh inlay to be as thick as possible because when you sand it down you do not want to sand through the entire inlay (I've done this TWICE!). Only sand the BACK of teh inlay, this way it's flat and will imo glue better when you dig out the grip and put teh image in the grip.
