WalMart has wooden spools in the craft section. Got a plastic box there also (tackle section) that holds 18 spools. Drilled a 1/8 inch hole over the center of each section and it was ready to go.
Wrapping in bands sure speeds things up, but there's still a place for single thread wraps. I haven't tried a closed wrap yet using the band technique yet - still trying to increase the number of threads I can handle at one time.

Thanks Michael! For some reason I was imagining that you were holding the box some how but I see you are running the threads through your fingers for tension. Thanks again for the visual.

How big are those wooden spools? The last ones I ordered, hold about 200 yards of size A. 50 of them for $10

This board is really getting good, last night I was thinking to ask for someone to post a picture of the box. I didn't even ask, and here it is. Like Magic.

Billy, I don't know how much thread they hold but I'll measure spool diameters tomorrow - if I don't forget. I think they were about a dollar for 15 spools.

Mike , it looks like you have some kind of grommets in the holes , what did you use, or is it just a bead of epoxy to protect the threads ? John D

John, I just drilled the holes and then burned them with a Bic to round the rough stuff.

Billy, I sent you an e-mail with various measurements of Wal-Mart's wooden spools to compare with the ones you have - to see if they'll work.

Billy, your spam blocker won't let the wooden spool info get through. Sent the measurements 3 times. E-mail me when you get time.

Sorry about that Stan, did you send it tovivonab@colsonservices.com? THEre is no need to even bother cleaning up the holes you drill in the box - just trim teh excess with a razor. I've drilled about 100 holes in various boxes, and never once had a problem with teh thread getting hung up or frayed. I think teh heat from the drill bit smooths the inside of teh hole out, I dunno.
