One of the problems I found is that when using regular thread it tends to darken when you apply color preserver. The grey turned our darker than what I thought it would be.

Nice shading on the leaves. You gotta focus the camera better - if you cannot get a clear shot with that background, use a solid color background.

Nice looking rod for the nephew...(family rods are the best) On the photography, I've found that my camera will concentrate on the background, when the background is in range of the "macro" focus. By having the background far away from the rod, I get better results (I don't know why..."it is what it is")

The focus is out for one of two reasons: Either the camera won't focus at much closer than 3 feet and thus the background is the first thing reaching that distance, or, the auto-focus feature read the background and focused on that rather than the narrow rod which can be hard for the feature to "see."
