Thought I could have found my favorite rod, actually was favorite for a very short time. Felt the bite, reeled down straight to fish, went to set the hook and watched the upper third slide off into the water. Its a two peice rod so I will have to buy another blank and fit the upper section to the handle section that is not broken. I could have wrapped the guide to tight. I realy took some time with the guide prep and handle for rod. A lotta sloppy with the epoxy but the rods I care most about uasually end up that way. Any ideas what this break looks caused from ?. I do not have Rod Maker 12-6 and was wandering what others think could have been the cause. I was useing 12 lb. mono on a blank raited 12-20.

Without having it in hand to examine more closely, my guess would be a stress failure resulting from some sort of impact prior to the actual failure. The other possibility would be a failure resulting from an earlier crushing force. I see some splits running along the length of the blank. I can't tell how long these are, but if they're more than an inch or so, it is very possible that something lightly crushed the blank leading to a failure the next time it was flexed. I do not believe it had anything to do with how you wrapped the guide.

Hi Tom, Thank you for your reply.I had only fished this rod one time and thought I finally found the blank I have been searching high and low to find. Was very careful and it had its own padded rod travel case. It is nice to think it may not have been the guide wrapped to tight. The inside wall thickness looks really thin where I think you see the cracks running along the blank. I am hopping to find the will to purchase another blank because I did think the rod was going to be great, also the handle came out to be the one I liked the best of my previous rods.

Rod blanks are often damaged in shipment. Did you give it a good stress test before building on it?

Hi Tom, Thank you for your reply again. I did think I did a good stress test before and after fitting the handle, also after aligning the guides when wrapped. The last thing I want is to glue on a handle that I spent a few days making and have the rod blank break. The first blank I ordered by this manufacturer showed up in like eight different pieces. I called them and they sent another one. I thought so much of what I saw of the first broken one (even being broken) I ordered the less powerful model to try it also which I have fished a few times with no problems. The first rod blank they sent was sent in a one inch PVC tube and that is why it showed up broken. I did not want to call them again because they where very nice about replacing the first one that showed up in pieces. I will have to buy another blank to fit the top section to the bottom section, I do not want to loose the handle I already made. If the blank can stay togeather it will be my favorite Bass rod I have ever made. Tom, thank you for your reply, have a great day, Rich.

Give the manufacturer a call and see if you can buy just a tip section.
I know Batson will sell replacement tips.
